CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND REGISTRATION

Chain Making Classes

Instructor: Mary Cohen

The craft of chain weaving has ancient origins and contemporary appeal. Learn to construct elegant handcrafted chains in two classes, each featuring a jewelry weave suitable for bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Our morning class will focus on a beginning weave for which no experience is necessary. In the afternoon class we will learn a more complex intermediate weave.

We will weave our chains with saw-cut, tumble-polished copper rings, provided by the instructor in the ring kit. Each kit will contain enough rings for a bracelet 8.5 inches long
plus a copper or stainless steel clasp.

For more information on chain weaving see    www.mailartisan.com

Filigree Earrings

When soldered together, they give the look of a pretty lace. No prior jewelry experience is necessary. All silver wire, ear wires, and filigree wire will be supplied.

The class will start with a demo of how to prepare the twisted wire.  Then students will make an outer frame for the earrings, shape the several filigree elements, fit them into the frame and solder all of the joints.  After a little sanding and a quick polish, you’ll be able to attach some ear wires and wear your earrings home.

When Sunday, July 10 from 10:00 to 1:00.

Not your usual wire-wrapping project!  Wire-weaving is a rich, fabulous blend of textures and patterns coalescing into a 3-D organic sculpture, and it is completely constructed from wire.  Come and learn how!

Sylvia works with Sterling Silver and Copper, and her metalsmithing skills include: soldering, forging, and etching, as well as wire-weaving and chain-maille.  Sylvia has been making jewelry for nine years, starting out in Anthony Chavez’ jewelry class at Venice High School in 2002.

In her class, you will make a 3-D wire-weaved pendant to take home with you. Your pendant will be constructed of a basic weave pattern, embellished with beads and a coiled wire bead.
